After graduating with his Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Phil expressed an interest in Landscape Architecture, but no interest in returning to school. So he entered the landscaping industry as a draftsman for a local design/build firm. As his plant knowledge grew, it wasn’t long before he was promoted to landscape designer. A few years later, he left that firm and started his own- Poplar Hill Landscape. As time went on, somehow, as destiny would have it, Phil attended a seminar on outdoor lighting and a passion was sparked! In 1989 he designed and installed his first “lighting job”, and his career went in a new direction with a focus on lumination. Lighting is a difficult media to control, but with a strong design background he excelled, and quickly became known as “The Guy Who Paints with Light”.
Landscaping was discontinued, a name change was in order, and Phil founded Luminated Landscapes, Inc which specialized in exterior residential lighting. The scope of projects expanded into interior lighting makeovers, small commercial façade lighting, custom design and manufacturing of one-of-a-kind light fixtures, and animated Christmas displays. Simply put Phil says, “I turn my client’s feelings into light.” He holds two design patents as well. His hands-on, nothing is impossible approach comes from having worked in all phases of construction, in landscaping, as a contractor, salesman, house flipping, and most importantly being a loving father and a husband.
Phil and his family reside on their farm in East Aurora, NY. He finds it ironic that Aurora by definition means luminous phenomenon.
